46 years ago, Shan Mai Food was the Her Wey Xiang Bakery located at the triangle street corner next to the Dajia Jenn Lann Temple; it was a small store specialized in making products such as Taiwanese bride cakes, pastries, baby snacks and bread. One year, the betel nut taro in Dajia district was unsalable. To take care of taro farmers, cater to market needs, and change channel types, Shan Mai tried to develop its product using Dajia betel nut taro, and in 1998 it made the first taro cake. Its solid filling and fresh taste not only let a�?Shan Mai Taro Cakea�? become famous in Taiwan, but also promote the overall economic benefits of taro farmers in Dajia district.

In 2004, Shan Mai taro cake was named for the snack of state banquet and since then has become a cake representative of a�?Taiwanese tastea�? and a�?Taiwanese memory.a�? It has received special awards such as the 15 best Taiwanese souvenirs by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and won iF design award from Germany. It really is a souvenir that tourists have to get. Shan Mai currently has 9 chain stores. Apart from taro cakes, it also has creative products such as slobber cookies, small crispy cakes, star shaped cookies, popsicles and ice cream. Taro cake: This is Shan Maia��s most popular product, selecting Dajia betel nut taro, natural butter and trehalose for production. Making the dough by hand and baking instead of frying the cake make the crust crispy and filling chewy. And the cake emits the fragrance of taro and milk and taro cubes can be found inside. As Shan Mai uses trehalose that is less sweet, the calories of each taro cake is just 147 kcals. There are totally 5 flavors: original flavor, sweet potato chewy flavor, green tea chewy flavor, egg yolk flavor, and mochi flavor.
Taiwan love cake: The name of the cake is from its Taiwanese homonym a�?Tsin Ai Phinga�?, meaning that Taiwanese a�?really love working harda�?.
