The best of the top ten sites

Juguang Tower was voted visitorsa favorite site in December, 2007, in the Kinmenas Top Ten Destinationsa election, once again proving its charm. Located on the hills overlooking the Juguang Lake in Jincheng Township, the tower was constructed in 1953 in an elegant antique Chinese fashion. Solemn and magnificent, the building symbolizes the spiritual fortress of Kinmen. It also hosts a collection of Kinmenas historic elements, while posing as a museum displaying tourism resources. Outside the tower is a recreation area with vast grass land and great scenery. The public telephone booth was painted with Kinmenas unique red color. Itas extremely cute, attracting tourists to stop and take photos.

Located on the southwestern tip of the Jincheng Township, overlooking the Juguang Lake, the tower faces Wu-jiang River, covering more than 66 acres. From the top of the tower, one can absorb the full picture of Jincheng Township, while looking out on Chinkung island, Lieyu Township and China.

Built in 1952, the tower was initially constructed in commemoration of the heroic officers and soldiers who fought the many battles in Kinmen, while also used to reveal the magnificent signboard reading a?Do not forget the time at Ju.a? Ju is the first Chinese character in a?Juguang,a? the name of the tower. The idiom bore the meaning to remind nationals not to forget the humiliation of losing our country. In the following autumn, the structure of the tower was complete. The manpower and money costed for this construction was incredible: almost every soldier and citizen in Kinmen joined the effort.

Plague inscribed by soldier bears great significance

The building is three stories-high, modeled after an antique palace building. At the top floor of the tower is a large plaque on which engraved three Chinese characters, reading a?Juguang Tower.a? It was inscribed by the hero of the battle of the Dadan Islet and Erdan Islet, Lai Sheng-ming (e??cY??Z). Lai was a low-ranking soldier who achieved a difficult order, and was viewed as a national hero following the victory. Having a low-rank soldier instead of a famous figure or social celebrity to inscribe the plague was extraordinary.
