Witnessing the age of war
Lieyu Township, often referred to as the “Little Kinmen” by locals as opposed to Kinmen’s main island, is located between Kinmen and Xiamen, less than 7 kilometers away from China. It went through numerous tragic battles during the age of war. Now with the change of current political situation, few troops are stationed on the island, while the greater proportion of the younger generation has moved out from the island. Despite so, there are still many locations on the island where visitors can sense the special tension during the war, among them is the magnificent Jiugong Tunnel.
Former material transport pipeline, current tourist spot
The tunnel began construction 50 years ago. The granite was exploded, then the rocks were moved out by manpower. The tunnel was used to transport supplements to China during the war. This is why the Jiugong Tunnel looks across from the Zhaishan Tunnel. The Jiugong Tunnel is no longer used as material transport pipeline, but a historic spot open to tourists.
Zhaishan Tunnel is located on the main Kinmen island, which functioned similar to Jiugong tunnel. The former’s length is 357 meters long whereby the latter is 790 meters long. The maximum width is 15 meters, and height is 11.5 meters. There are another five supporting tunnels and four entrances at the Zhaishan Tunnel, which is twice the size of Jiugong Tunnel. Take a stroll inside the tunnels, and it’s cool even during the summer. The sound of the water can be heard, creating a rare fun.
