SUNRISE AT ZHUSHAN
This is a grade-a sunrise watching spot that will definitely become the highlight of your Taiwan vacation!
If lucky, we might catch another of the five wonders in Alishan — the spectacle known as the “sea of clouds.”
Zhushan Station has the highest altitude of all the railway stations in Taiwan. It is now a popular destination for those early risers that come here to chase the sunrise.
Alishan House is a historic hotel with 100 year age. Moreover, this place has housed many former Taiwanese presidents. This is one of the top choices for spending a night at Alishan.
THE BEST OF ALISHAN (ALI MOUNTAINS)
Jyumucun Forest Road is a raised wood-planked trail that winds through a forest of enormous Red Cypresses.
The 1,000-meter path also leads to the old Alishan Shenmu (sacred tree) which was toppled by lightning. Guangwu Cypress can also be found by following the Jyumucun Forest Road, this tree is named “the new Alishan Shenmu”; it is 2,300 years old, with a height of 45 meters and a trunk circumference of 12.3 meters. The Sister Ponds are supposed to be the manifestation of two aboriginal girls who died for love. The two ponds are about 50 meters apart. The larger is 528 square meters in size, with an island on which there is a cypress tree stump that has been converted into a pavilion. It can be reached by a bridge from the edge of the pond. The second pond is only 66 square meters in size. To its right is one of the most densely grown natural cypress forests in the whole area. With nearly one hundred years of history, Shoushen Temple attracts countless worshippers and visitors from different parts of Taiwan on the birthday of Xuantian Shangdi to witness the deity’s miracle. The temple is thus swarmed with crowds. The temple was reconstructed in 1969. Around the birthday of Xuantian Shangdi, armor-like magic butterflies must come to celebrate the birthday for the deity; the large recorded number was over two dozen at a time. They stopped on the deity’s beard, which was considered as a miracle to believers.
SMILEY PUPPET COMEDY CLUB
As their name suggests, this fun-filled show is set to start your vacation with a smile!
This comedy group is endorsed by the Chiayi County Cultural Tourism Bureau, its members are mainly senior citizens, with an average age of 72 years old. Smiley Puppet Comedy Club focuses on interpreting old Taiwanese fables such as anecdotes of the beloved deity Matsu.
FENCHIHU OLD STATION
The world renowned Alishan Mountain Railway is one of the few mountain railways in the world.
It was originally built to transport timber yet now transport tourists through the forest. Fenchihu is the midway point and the largest station in the Alishan Forest Railway. Located at an altitude of 1,405 meters, this was where the old steam trains changed locomotive and the crew took a rest. There’s a train museum nearby the station, where replicas of old steam trains take visitors back to the golden days of the Alishan Forest Railway.

Spending a lazy afternoon at a trendy coffee house has now become a must-do while visiting Taiwan! Ajong 23 Coffee: The owner of this unusual bed and breakfast, Ajong, is a Tsou local. He designed this house by imagining the everyday environments of the Tsou people 500 years ago. Entering here is like taking a time machine, which makes you forget the hurries of modern life. Ajong attracts many art lovers, including Japanese singer-songwriter Masaharu Fukuyama, who once stayed here during a vacation in Taiwan.
